Laser Devices

The Iowa State University Laser Use policy is based on the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z136 series, "Safe Use of Lasers" standards, in compliance with state and federal regulations.

This manual contains regulatory requirements, university policies, and prudent practices that apply to the use of lasers in laboratories and the use of lasers for entertainment purposes on campus. 

Iowa State University allows the use of Class 2 and Class 3A/R laser pointers without prior approval. The use of Class 3B and Class 4 lasers requires the approval of the Laser Safety Officer.

Communicate hazards in your workspace.

EH&S will audit the laser authorization annually. This process will include a laser hazard assessment. A copy of the Laser Inspection Criteria Form (PDF) is available for your use.
