To celebrate and strengthen a culture of safety and accountability, EH&S proudly recognizes ISU research teams who demonstrate exceptional safety performance.

Each month, one research group will be selected at random from among those who received an "Areas of Excellence" in their annual safety survey report. The selected research team will be recognized with a certificate and formally acknowledged within their department/unit, celebrating their commitment to fostering a safe and responsible research environment.

In July, a final awardee will be chosen from the monthly recipients, following a targeted safety walk-through to confirm continued excellence.

This program supports EH&S's mission to elevate safety standards and reward leadership in research environments.

Department Lab Safety Contacts (DLSC)

The Partnership is aimed at empowering and developing the role of the DLSC in order to build a stronger relationship between EH&S and researchers. By creating trust, reliability, and cooperation between departments and EH&S, the message and practice of safety can be delivered more effectively.

This Partnership also provides an avenue for prompt feedback, therefore promoting timely and continual program improvement.

Amber Crowley-Gall and her research team- Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Microbiology

EH&S recognizes Dr. Crowley-Gall and her team for the exemplary housekeeping and organizational practices consistently demonstrated in their lab. In the annual safety survey conducted by EH&S in February, we noted the care they took to maintain an orderly workspace. Their adherence to strict beehandling protocols and proactive safety measures reflects a strong, deliberate commitment to maintaining a safe working environment for all lab personnel.

Javier Vela-Becerra and his research team- Chemistry

EH&S recognizes the outstanding work of Dr. Vela-Becerra and his team for their dedication to laboratory safety. In the annual safety survey conducted by EH&S in January, we noted their excellent management of peroxideforming chemicals (PFCs). Keeping these materials in a dedicated, clearly labeled storage area not only streamlines testing and tracking but also significantly strengthens the overall safety of their lab. In addition, their commitment to proper PFC management helps ensure safer conditions for our EH&S team during the waste disposal process.

Manojit Pramanik and his research team- Electrical and Computer Engineering

Manojit Pramanik demonstrated exemplary safety practices in the laser work area. Laser SOPs were clearly posted and readily available; all required safety signage was in place. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including laser safety glasses and lab coats, were neatly arranged in designated areas for easy visibility and access. These practices support safe laser operation and help ensure consistent, proper PPE use.

Ryan Braga and his team- Material Science and Engineering

EH&S recognizes Ryan Braga and his team for their exceptional dedication to laboratory safety. In the annual safety survey conducted by EH&S in November, we have noted their outstanding commitment to a safe and healthy workplace. From consistent training and clear, well-written SOPs to thorough hazard assessments and strong collaboration across labs, they have set a high standard of accountability and teamwork.

Melinda Moeller and her research team- ISU Library

EH&S recognizes Melinda Moeller and her team for their excellence in managing peroxide-forming chemicals. During the annual safety survey conducted by EH&S in October, we were pleased to see her team paying excellent attention to proper labeling, routine testing, and safe storage of peroxide-forming chemicals, which reflects a strong commitment to workplace safety.

Craig Wiebke and his research team- Iowa State Center

EH&S recognizes Craig Wiebke and his team for their consistent efforts to maintain tidy workspaces and keep walkways clear of obstacles. During the annual shop safety survey conducted by EH&S in September 2025, they found a well-maintained, organized work environment. Their attention to detail plays a key role in supporting a safe and efficient workplace for everyone.

EH&S recognizes Craig Severson and the Boyd Lab for their outstanding committment to safety and operational excellence. During the annual shop safety survey conducted by EH&S in August 2025, the Boyd Lab achieved a defect-free safety rating for the first time- an impressive accomplishment. In addition to their excellent safety record, the lab was also recognized as one of the cleanest and best-organized shop spaces on campus. It stands as a model for what campus makerspaces can strive for regarding both safety and functionality.
