Entrance signs provide critical information to users, visitors, and emergency responders, alerting them to specific hazards. Faculty and staff are responsible for keeping their hazard communication signage current.

Hazard communication reminders

Remember, your hazard communication signs are to be:

  1. Printed in color.
  2. Posted at the main entrance to the room.
  3. Posted on the outside of the door.
  4. Posted either:
    • Option A - Below the room number sign plaque; or
    • Option B – If no room number sign plaque is present, approximately 50-inches high adjacent or centered on the door.

If you would like assistance with posting and covering the existing NFPA diamond, please contact EH&S at (515) 294-5359 or ehsinfo@iastate.edu.

Emergency action plans

Principal investigators and laboratory supervisors must develop emergency action plans (EAPs) for their laboratories. Refer to Section C. Emergency Planning in the Laboratory Safety Manual (PDF) for a description of the information that should be included.

Once you have created your EAP, remember to:

  • Post your completed EAP near the room exit for easy retrieval during an incident.
  • Annually review and update the plan.
  • Train all personnel on the EAP and document the training (PDF).
