Stop the Bleed
Iowa State University is proud to participate in the national Stop the Bleed campaign. Stop the Bleed is a bleeding control program designed to increase the survival rate of people who experience life-threatening blood loss. In partnership with Student Health and Wellness and the Department of Public Safety, EH&S is training and equipping the campus community to intervene in medical emergencies involving severe bleeding.
Bleeding Control Kits
Every automated external defibrillator (AED) cabinet on campus also contains a bleeding control kit. Each of these kits includes sterile gauze, a trauma dressing, a tourniquet, a survival blanket, trauma shears, and nitrile gloves. Anyone on campus is empowered to use a bleeding control kit in a medical emergency.
Additional kits are available for work areas that may be at elevated risk for injuries. For further information, contact EH&S at ehsinfo@iastate.edu.
Stop the Bleed Training
You can learn to stop the bleed and save a life! ISU offers a monthly Stop the Bleed class. This two-hour hands-on session is open to all ISU students and employees. You'll learn how to recognize life-threatening bleeding, ensure your own safety at the scene, apply pressure, pack wounds, and use a tourniquet, giving you the confidence to use a campus bleeding control kit or to improvise in an austere environment. To register, log into Learn@ISU and search for "Stop the Bleed."
