Every year, thousands of farm workers are injured, and hundreds more die in farming incidents. Iowa State University strives to make all its farms as safe as possible. Review the site-specific training below before working on a farm or operating farm machinery.

    By taking this course, you will learn what the definition of an alternative vehicle is, the features of vehicles, the safety requirements and operating practices for using these types of vehicles, how to perform a pre-ride inspection and maintain your vehicle, as well as the importance of maintaining your skills through refresher training.

    You will learn the features of a tractor, how to identify tractor hazards, safe operating practices, the function of rollover protective structures, how to prevent run-over accidents, inspection, and maintenance, and the importance of maintaining your skills through refresher training. We will also review the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Agricultural Standard, which regulates all employers and employees who operate agricultural tractors. The guidelines in this training outline potential tractor hazards and provide recommendations to eliminate, isolate, or minimize those hazards.

    This course covers the requirements of the Worker Protection Standard (WPS) for employees who are working in areas where pesticides that have an “Agricultural Use Requirements” section on the product label have been applied within the last 30 days or a restricted entry interval (REI) has been in effect within the last 30 days. Workers are people doing work such as harvesting, weeding, pruning, or irrigation for agricultural plants on farms, forests, and in nurseries or enclosed space production areas, such as greenhouses.
