Required training

Only qualified and authorized personnel are permitted to operate laser systems. Therefore, all Class 3B and Class 4 laser operators must complete Laser Safety Training, participate in a medical surveillance program, and complete all required departmental job activity training before performing this activity. Laser operators must complete retraining training every three years. For details about what general laboratory training is required, see the Laboratory Safety Manual (PDF).

Laser Safety for the Operator (Workday Learning) shows operators how to identify, evaluate, and control potential hazards associated with Class 3B and 4 lasers. This training must be refreshed every three years.

Additionally, each laser user must be trained on the operation of each laser or laser system by the laser supervisor (principal investigator). This training must cover:

  • SOPs
  • alignment procedures
  • secondary hazards
  • protective equipment
  • other pertinent safety information

A record of training must also be maintained in the laboratory.

Laser Safety Awareness Training (Workday Learning) provides workers in a laser laboratory with Class 3B and 4 lasers with an overview of basic laser safety. Participants will learn what is required of them when working in laboratories where lasers are used. This training does not qualify the participant to operate Class 3B or Class 4 lasers.

Medical surveillance requirement

Iowa State University laser operators must submit a completed Hazard Inventory Form to Occupational Medicine. An initial eye exam is required for laser operators who have had or suspected a prior eye exposure. Contact Occupational Medicine at (515) 294-2056 to schedule an eye exam. Medical evaluation is required if an exposure or suspected exposure is above the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limit to either the eyes or skin.
