Halogen Lamps

Halogen lamps are prohibited at Iowa State University. They were popular because they produce a large amount of light and the purchase cost is very reasonable. However, they have caused many fires in the United States, including a fire in Larch Residence Hall at Iowa State University on November 1, 1997.

Halogen lamps, also called torch or torchiere lamps, produce intense light by using high-temperature halogen bulbs. These bulbs can reach temperatures of over 1000° F. The intense heat may cause combustible materials to ignite.
