Be Prepared while Tailgating

We all enjoy Cyclone football, but for many, the pregame tailgating is just as important. Follow these tips to keep your tailgating time safe.

Tailgating Area Reminders

  • Leave room for cars to drive through and a path wide enough for an ambulance or fire truck if needed. This could be a matter of life or death for a fan.
  • Games such as football or frisbee should be moved away from crowds to prevent hitting an unsuspecting person.
  • Glass bottles are not allowed, so limit what you bring to plastic and cans.
  • Grills should be set up away from pedestrian traffic areas. Grill tanks must be secured to the grill and not sitting on the grass.
  • If you cook with charcoal do NOT dispose in regular trash bins or on the ground.
  • Do not store warm grills under your vehicle (especially near the gas tank).
  • If you use a generator and extension cords, make sure the cords are not extending across a sidewalk or walkway.
  • Iowa State University does not allow individuals to stand on any parked vehicle in the parking lot; including buses even with a rail.
  • All Iowa educational institutions, including Iowa State University campus are smoke-free, so there is no smoking in the stadium and all parking lots.

Food Safety

Keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Holding food at an unsafe temperature is a prime cause of food borne illnesses. Be sure to include antibacterial wet wipes so hands and work areas may be washed before preparing food. Check out the Centers for Disease Control and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Food Safety webpages for tips on safe handling of your tailgating goodies.
