Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the science that addresses human performance factors (human engineering) and how they relate to the job, the workplace, tools, and the environment. As part of a comprehensive health and safety program, EH&S offers Iowa State University personnel a variety of ergonomic resources. An overview of EH&S' program is available in the publication entitled Introduction to Ergonomics.

Other ergonomics-related services available at Iowa State University include EH&S ergonomic worksite evaluations, as well as courses in office ergonomics and computer-related eyestrain. The purpose of an ergonomic evaluation is to identify occupational repetitive stress injury risk factors and make appropriate recommendations based on current guidelines.

To request a worksite evaluation:

  • Fill out the Ergonomic Questionnaire and mail it to EH&S, 2809 Daley Drive, or fax it to EH&S at 294-9357.
  • Inform your supervisor about your concerns and that you would like to schedule an ergonomic worksite evaluation with EH&S. The employee or supervisor can schedule an evaluation, but EH&S encourages the participation of both parties in the evaluation process.
  • Provide an account number for the ergonomic evaluation. Basic ergonomic evaluations are available at a cost of $240.00.
  • Call EH&S at 294-5359 to schedule an evaluation.

To arrange ergonomic equipment installations or other workstation modifications, contact Central Stores at 294-8484. All employees seeking treatment for work-related injuries or illnesses, including ergonomic medical concerns, should first notify their departmental supervisors.

Supervisors must deliver completed “First Report of Injury” forms to the Office of Risk Management at 3618 Administrative Services Building within 24 hours of reporting the incident. Reports may be faxed to 294-1621 to the attention of the Claims Administrator.
