Confined Spaces
Each year hundreds of people are injured or die as a result of entering into confined spaces that contain unknown hazards. Most of these deaths could have been prevented if the entrants had been trained to recognize confined space hazards and had followed a plan for entry into confined spaces. To address this issue, EH&S developed the Confined Spaces Manual and periodically offers confined spaces training.
EH&S designed the Confined Spaces Manual and confined spaces training to assist university departments in their identification of confined spaces and their development of procedures to comply with the OSHA Permit-Required Confined Spaces Standard. Examples of typical confined spaces include:
- grain bins
- silos
- tanks
- pressure vessels
- sewer systems (lift stations)
- utility vaults (manhole entry)
- rail/truck tank cars
