Chemical Inventory

To meet the requirements of the Iowa State University Right to Know and Laboratory Safety programs, laboratories using hazardous chemicals are required to keep current chemical inventories and submit annual updates to EH&S. These inventories may be submitted in two ways:

  1. You may manually and individually enter chemical information into EH&S’ online chemical inventory system.
  2. You may submit spreadsheet inventories and have them appended to the central database by attaching your list to an email and sending it to Jim Gunning. Once the listing is appended, you will be sent a username and password that will enable you to access and edit your inventory online.

To simplify incorporation of your chemical inventory to the central database please format your list as follows:

    • Chemical inventories must be created for each location (room) where chemicals are stored.
    • Label inventories with: building, room, department, date, principal investigator name and phone number.
    • If possible list the following information for each chemical: Chemical Name, Manufacturer, Quantity, Units, CAS Number and Location. (see example)
    • Chemical name, quantity and units are the minimum required data.
    • To comply with federal reporting requirements chemical quantities must be submitted in liters (L) or kilograms (kg).
    • Preferred file format is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet or equivalent.
    • If you have questions or forget your login, contact Jim Gunning at 294-1899.
