Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) includes, but is not limited to: hard hats, plain and prescription safety glasses, goggles, welders’ helmets, face shields, safety shoes, aprons, gloves, protective clothing, ear muffs or plugs, respirators for both dusts and toxic materials, and other similar items.

Workplace hazard assessments are required to be completed by the OSHA Personal Protective Equipment Standard (29 CFR 1910.132). At Iowa State, hazard assessments are performed by departmental managers or supervisors. They may be completed for job tasks, a specific workplace, or by job title.

To assist departments in their evaluations of workplace hazards, EH&S has developed a PPE Assessment Form. This form documents completion of assessments and can be used to instruct new employees of PPE needs.

In addition to workplace hazard assessments, OSHA's PPE Standard also requires the proper selection of PPE based on specific hazards and training for employees that must wear PPE. To comply with this regulation, EH&S has developed PPE training, policies and guidelines governing the use of PPE at Iowa State.
